GCSE and IGCSE Maths sit at the same level and are accepted equally by UK universities. But the exam design, content emphasis and typical student profiles are different — and it's worth knowing why.
The core content overlaps
Number, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, statistics and probability all appear in both. A student prepared for one can adapt to the other with a targeted top-up on the syllabus differences.
IGCSE is designed for international schools
IGCSE (Cambridge and Edexcel International) is taken worldwide — Dubai, India, Singapore, Hong Kong and many UK independent schools. GCSE is the domestic English qualification and is heavier on functional/real-life contexts.
Small but real differences
- IGCSE tends to have more algebraic manipulation and slightly more pure-flavoured questions.
- GCSE Higher includes more problem-solving in unfamiliar contexts.
- Grading scales are broadly comparable (9–1 for both boards on most routes).
