Handling Exam Anxiety in Maths (Without Pretending It Away)
Feeling sick before Maths exams is common, not weak. Here's what actually helps — before, during and after the paper.
Exam anxiety in Maths is real and it costs marks. The goal isn't to stop feeling anxious — it's to make sure the anxiety doesn't stop you thinking.
Weeks before: build competence
Anxiety shrinks when you feel prepared. Consistent timed past-paper practice — marked against the scheme — is the single strongest confidence builder.
The night before
- Do a short, easy warm-up set — not a fresh full paper.
- Pack your equipment (calculator, spare batteries, ruler, protractor).
- Sleep beats last-minute cramming, every time.
In the exam: handle the freeze
If your mind goes blank, skip to a question you can do and come back. Getting three marks on the paper unfreezes almost every student. Never spend more than a minute stuck.
After the exam
Don't post-mortem answers with friends between papers. It's the fastest way to shake your confidence for the next one.
