Spaced Repetition for Maths and Science: What Actually Works
Flashcards work for definitions. Maths and Science need something more. Here's the right way to use spaced repetition.
Spaced repetition is the most studied technique in learning science. It works — but students often misuse it in Maths and Science, where recognising a fact isn't the same as being able to solve a question.
What flashcards are for
- Definitions, laws, formulae and standard results.
- Vocabulary in Biology and Chemistry.
- Non-formula-book identities and integrals in Maths.
What flashcards are not for
You can't flashcard your way to solving quadratic simultaneous equations or a mechanics problem. For skills, the equivalent of spacing is returning to the question type at increasing intervals.
Space your past-paper practice too
Revisit a topic three days later, then a week, then a fortnight. Each pass uses fresh questions on the same topic — not the same paper twice.
Combine cards, questions and mistake logs
The strongest routine layers three habits: daily flashcards for facts, spaced problem practice for skills, and a mistake log for the specific gaps that keep resurfacing.
