What is catalyst?
A catalyst speeds up a reaction by providing an alternative pathway with a lower activation energy, without being used up itself.

Catalyst: common questions
- What is the difference between a homogeneous and heterogeneous catalyst?
- A homogeneous catalyst is in the same physical state as the reactants; a heterogeneous one is in a different state, usually a solid with gaseous reactants.
- Do enzymes count as catalysts?
- Yes — enzymes are biological catalysts, highly specific to their substrate and sensitive to temperature and pH.
