What is pythagoras' theorem?
Pythagoras' theorem states that in a right-angled triangle the square of the hypotenuse equals the sum of the squares of the other two sides.

- Can Pythagoras be used on any triangle?
- No — only right-angled triangles. For other triangles use the sine or cosine rule.
- How do I know if a triangle is right-angled?
- Test whether the squares of the two shorter sides add to the square of the longest side; if they do, the triangle is right-angled.
