IB Maths AA HL Revision Guide: What to Prioritise
AA HL is the toughest IB Maths route. Here's what to prioritise if you're aiming for a 6 or 7.
IB Mathematics AA HL rewards deep algebraic and calculus fluency. Reaching a 7 is about pace, presentation and knowing which topics reward the biggest returns.
Priority topics for the 6/7 boundary
- Complex numbers, especially De Moivre's theorem.
- Proof by induction and algebraic proof.
- Calculus: chain rule, implicit differentiation, integration by parts.
- Vectors: lines, planes and their intersections.
Use the GDC deliberately
On Papers 2 and 3, the GDC saves minutes. Know its solver, graphing, statistics and matrix functions cold — don't discover them in the exam.
Paper 3 is a marathon
Paper 3's extended-response questions reward reading carefully and following the scaffolded steps. Practise past specimen and sample papers to build stamina.
Combine past papers with a predicted paper
There are only so many real IB past papers. A predicted paper targeting your weakest topics extends your practice without repeating questions you've seen.
