IB Maths AA vs AI: Which Should You Choose?

IB Mathematics splits into two routes: Analysis & Approaches (AA) and Applications & Interpretation (AI). Both come at Standard and Higher Level. The choice matters for the exam experience — and for university applications.
What AA is
AA is the more traditional, proof-heavy course — closer to A Level Maths. It leans on algebraic technique, calculus and formal reasoning, and it's the expected route for STEM and economics degrees at competitive universities.
What AI is
AI is applied and modelling-focused, with heavier use of technology, statistics and real-world data. It's an excellent fit for social sciences, business, design and any degree where mathematical modelling matters more than pure proof.
How to decide
- Check your target universities' course requirements — some engineering/maths programmes only accept AA HL.
- Be honest about how much you enjoy abstract algebra and calculus vs data and modelling.
- Talk to your teacher about your current attainment before committing.
