International Baccalaureate (IB)IB Diploma ProgrammeMathematics: Analysis and Approaches (SL & HL)

IB Maths Analysis & Approaches past papers (AA SL & HL)

IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches is the more algebraic and proof-focused of the two DP maths courses. At both levels Paper 1 is sat without a graphic display calculator and Paper 2 allows one, so AA rewards exact algebraic technique as much as modelling. Higher Level adds a third paper of extended problem-solving, and every candidate also submits an internally assessed exploration.

Tiers: Standard Level (SL) and Higher Level (HL)

Paper structure

SL Paper 1

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 80 marks
  • Non-calculator

Short-response and extended-response questions across the SL syllabus, no GDC permitted.

SL Paper 2

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 80 marks
  • Calculator

Short-response and extended-response questions with a graphic display calculator required.

HL Paper 1

  • 2 hours
  • 110 marks
  • Non-calculator

Short-response and extended-response questions across the HL syllabus, no GDC permitted.

HL Paper 2

  • 2 hours
  • 110 marks
  • Calculator

Short-response and extended-response questions with a graphic display calculator required.

HL Paper 3

  • 1 hour
  • 55 marks
  • Calculator

Two extended problem-solving questions that build across several linked parts.

  • Paper 1 is the non-calculator paper at both SL and HL — exact values, surds and algebraic manipulation decide it.
  • Higher Level adds Paper 3, which is unlike anything on Papers 1 and 2: long, scaffolded investigations rather than short questions.
  • All candidates complete the mathematical exploration (internal assessment) in addition to the written papers.

Paper structure reflects the current specification. Grade boundaries and exam dates change every series — always check the board's published documents for your own series.

How to revise with past papers

  1. 1. Split practice by paper type

Do Paper 1 sets with the GDC put away and Paper 2 sets with it in hand — mixing the two hides which skill is actually weak.

  2. 2. Master your GDC before Paper 2

Solving equations, finding intersections, numerical integration and statistical functions should take seconds, not minutes.

  3. 3. Train Paper 3 separately (HL)

Practise long, linked investigations where later parts depend on earlier ones; the skill is sustaining an argument, not speed.

  4. 4. Show reasoning in IB command-term language

Answer exactly what 'show that', 'hence', 'justify' and 'find' demand — IB mark schemes award reasoning marks explicitly.

Common questions

Which IB Maths AA paper is non-calculator?
Paper 1 at both SL and HL is sat without a graphic display calculator. Paper 2 (and HL Paper 3) require one.
How many papers are there in IB Maths AA?
SL has two papers; HL has three, adding a one-hour extended problem-solving paper.
What is the difference between AA and AI?
Analysis and Approaches is more algebraic and proof-based, while Applications and Interpretation is more modelling, statistics and technology focused.
Should I take AA SL or AA HL?
HL covers substantially more content at greater depth and adds Paper 3. It is usually required for maths-heavy university courses — check the entry requirements for the degrees you are considering.
