Edexcel A Level Further Maths past papers (9FM0)

Edexcel A Level Further Mathematics is assessed by four written papers. Papers 1 and 2 are the compulsory Core Pure papers taken by every candidate; Papers 3 and 4 are chosen from the optional routes your school teaches — commonly Further Pure, Further Statistics and Further Mechanics. A calculator is allowed in every paper, and Further Maths is co-taught with A Level Mathematics, so the standard A Level content is assumed throughout.

Paper structure

Paper 1: Core Pure Mathematics 1

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 75 marks
  • Calculator

Complex numbers, matrices, series, roots of polynomials, vectors, volumes of revolution and proof by induction.

Paper 2: Core Pure Mathematics 2

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 75 marks
  • Calculator

Further complex numbers, further calculus, polar coordinates, hyperbolic functions and differential equations.

Paper 3: Optional paper

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 75 marks
  • Calculator

One optional route, e.g. Further Pure 1, Further Statistics 1 or Further Mechanics 1.

Paper 4: Optional paper

  • 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 75 marks
  • Calculator

A second optional route chosen alongside Paper 3.

  • All four papers are equally weighted, so the two optional papers carry the same value as Core Pure.
  • Core Pure 1 and Core Pure 2 are compulsory for every candidate; the option combination is chosen by your school.
  • Further Maths assumes the full A Level Mathematics content, so weak standard calculus or algebra shows up immediately in Core Pure.

Paper structure reflects the current specification. Grade boundaries and exam dates change every series — always check the board's published documents for your own series.

How to revise with past papers

  1. 1. Confirm your option papers first

Ask your teacher exactly which optional papers you are entered for — practising the wrong option is the single biggest wasted-effort risk in Further Maths.

  2. 2. Secure Core Pure 1 before Core Pure 2

Complex numbers, matrices and series underpin the second paper, so build fluency there before moving to hyperbolics and differential equations.

  3. 3. Write full method for structured proofs

Induction, vector geometry and differential equation questions award most marks for structure and justification, not the final line.

  4. 4. Use the calculator deliberately

A calculator is allowed in every paper — practise matrix, equation-solving and numerical integration functions so you can verify answers quickly under time pressure.

Common questions

How many papers are there in Edexcel A Level Further Maths?
Four papers, each 1 hour 30 minutes and worth 75 marks: Core Pure 1, Core Pure 2 and two optional papers.
Can I use a calculator in Edexcel Further Maths?
Yes. A calculator is permitted in all four papers of 9FM0.
Which optional papers should I take?
That is decided by your school's teaching route. Common combinations pair Further Pure 1 with Further Statistics 1 or Further Mechanics 1 — check your entry before revising.
Do I need A Level Maths as well?
Yes. Further Mathematics is taken alongside A Level Mathematics and assumes that content in full.
